Good, Little Things Today

Nora cleaning in the chicken dress Grandma made for her.  This girl REALLY wants some chickens.  She's still talking about them and currently carrying around a "farm fresh" egg in a basket in the hopes that it will hatch, and for those of you who have been visiting this blog for awhile, well, you know how long those chickens have been on her heart.  There are leftovers from a rice krispy treat all over her dress.

Crazy good corn salsa that I canned with just a little bit of rust in it.  Oops.

Nora's butterfly garden in full swing.  (Your "seed paper" letter is in here, Bekah!)

These flowers are...there's only word for it:  whimsical.  Hearts!  All around!

My dirty shoes.  Solution:  go without shoes.  Dirty feet clean up easier.  Just don't be surprised if you come over and it looks like I haven't bathed in a year.  Believe me.  I'm clean under all the dirt.

Remember these popsicles?!  They spell Summer.

So, here's the funny story.  I planted what I thought (because that's what the package said) yellow squash and zucchini.  Two months later, some gargantuan vining monster plant had taken over the garden.  "Whoa.  That's some crazy zucchini," I thought.  I've been waiting and waiting for all that zucchini.  Today, I found these hiding in there.  Apparently, they are "decorative gourds."  I don't know about you, but nothing about these things says "decorative" to me.  Warty.  Yes.  Disgusting.  Absolutely.  Edible?  Not at all.  So, 1/3 of my garden has been taken over by inedible, warty gourds.  I think this is hilarious.

Nora gesticulating while I teach her how to make pickles.  "You'll be able to say, 'I've been making pickles since I was 4 years old, Nora.'"  "Oh, I've been making them a lot longer than that."

Garlic, coriander, red onions.  I have a hard time growing onions here.  They're always so small.  Any gardeners out there know what might be going on?

Saving seeds.

Bread and butter pickles.

My dad will be here tomorrow.  All the way from Colorado.

  3. This post is making me hungry and I just had breakfast!! I love your daughter, she is beautiful and hilarious. Two fantastic qualities she picked up from her fantastic mother. :)

So, my brother-in-law probably won't be here most of next week, which means I'll be home alone, which means I could come out and see you and Nora before school starts!! I could help with any possible kitchen or garden project. Think of some way you can put me to work, please, before I start writing dozens of papers and short stories for you. :)
